Activity Samples

Read through and watch the videos for the following “YELLSy” experiential activity ideas.

Marble Pipeline

Objective: Work as a team to get a series of marbles from one side of the room to the other using only pieces of pipe cut in half

Tic-Tac-Toe Relay

Team Snakes

Team snakes uses non-verbal communication to guide a team through this trust and team-building activity.

The Bigger Picture!

Create a list of 10 – 20 items, areas, and landmarks in and around your space or community to prepare the game. Use images to create the list by snapping your pics of elements of a larger item. Things like a number on a specific clock or a notable decoration on a teacher’s desk will work. Then, send players off to scour the grounds and identify the “bigger picture.” The teams will have their work cut out for them!

Variation: As they find an object, there is an additional task that they must complete before moving to find the next one. Once they complete the task, they collect a piece “of the bigger picture” (a puzzle piece of an image of the YELLS family). Once they return back to the main group, they must complete the puzzle in order to complete the challenge.

Paper Chain Race

Objective: Be the team the makes the longest paper chain

Set Up: Divide Group into 2 teams. Each team has 6 sheets of paper, a roll of tape, and 2 pairs of scissors.

Round 1: Set the timer for two minutes and have each team race to make the longest paper chain.

Round 2: Have each team choose a leader. The facilitator takes the leader out of the room and explains to them that for the next round their team may only use their right hands. (The left hand should be behind their back.) Bring the leaders back to their groups. Tell the groups that they have 30 seconds to talk amongst themselves and plan, then there can be NO talking.

Set the timer for two minutes and have each team race to make the longest paper chain with the new set of rules.

Balloon Towers

Are you looking for a fun and engaging team building activity to do with your group? Look no further than Balloon Tower! We love to do this activity to encourage teamwork and discuss conquering challenges. We would love to hear how you use it, too!

Objective: Use a bag of balloons and roll of masking tape to build the tallest freestanding tower possible in the time allotted.

Time Needed:  20-30 minutes

Group Size:  Any, split into teams of 4-6 people

Materials (per team):

  • 1 bag of balloons
  • 1 roll of masking tape

Directions:  If your group is larger than 6, split into smaller teams.  Give each team a bag of balloons and a roll of tape.  Challenge the teams to make the tallest freestanding tower they can using only the balloons and tape.

Allow four minutes of brainstorming and planning. When you say “Go!” the tower building can begin.

Let the teams build for 10 minutes, giving time announcements at five minutes, two minutes and one minute remaining. At the end, whichever team has the tallest freestanding tower is the winner.

Congratulate all teams for creating such tall towers.

Variations:

You can make it more difficult by allowing the teams to brainstorm and plan for four minutes and then not allowing them to talk while they are building.

Instead of giving the teams balloons to start with, they have to earn them by completing a series of tasks.

Debrief Questions:

  1. What worked for your group? What didn’t? How did you know?
  2. What was challenging? How did you deal with those challenges?
  3. How do you feel about your finished tower?
  4. How is this activity like working on your project with your team?

Partner Spotlight: Little Free Library

We are thrilled to announce that we now have our very own Little Free Library here on campus at YELLS! Little Free Libraries are community tools that operate on the “Take One, Leave One” principle. With this in mind, it encourages students to take a book and leave a book behind! The library inspires a love for reading and achievement in literacy, it also supports a core value we emphasize at YELLS, Uplifting Others. As a routine part of our curriculum, YELLS scholars of all ages are encouraged to empower and uplift their fellow classmates and community members. Increased literacy starts by encouraging our little ones to read and getting them excited about reading in any way we can! By increasing the literacy rates of the youth in our community, we can raise test scores and continue making strides toward empowering our youth. The little library will be used as a resource for free books for our students as well as members of the Franklin Gateway community.

We’re so excited to add another fun and beneficial resource to our YELLS campus that helps us to continue to establish our position as a true community hub. This new addition is not only open to our YELLS families and students, but is a great opportunity for other families in the Franklin Gateway community to get acquainted with YELLS, and for us to connect with them as well! It’s amazing how something so small can have such a large potential impact and help us to get to know and support our neighbors even more.

This not only encourages a love for reading and achievement in literacy, but supports another core value we teach at YELLS, Uplifting Others. As a routine part of our curriculum, YELLS scholars of all ages are encouraged to empower and uplift their fellow classmates and community members. They are taught to work alongside other youth to grow and achieve success together. The concept behind the Little Free Library is a beautiful opportunity to teach this value further, given that our YELLS youth can leave their own favorite books behind for others to enjoy. It teaches them that there is no action too small when it comes to welcoming and offering support to their community. It’s also just a fun way to explore new reading opportunities they may not have had otherwise!

Mentoring Retreat 2023

Mentoring 2023 “Bigs” with Mentoring Coordinator: Erica Smith and Executive Director: Laura Keefe

The 2023-2024 Mentoring Retreat was a huge success! Each year, to welcome our “Bigs” into the Mentoring program, we host a retreat that emphasizes and teaches the importance of the YELLS values. “Bigs” are 9th-12th grade students who will be paired with one elementary schooler that they will mentor and assist with homework. They focused on building a sense of teamwork and bonding within our YELLS family, understanding the essential skills and various roles of an effective mentor/Big, and sharpening their relationship-building skills.

Upon arrival, each Big received a bag containing the tools necessary for their journey during the 24-hour retreat. Before entering our facility, each Big wrote down something they would be letting go of as they entered the retreat. Once they entered the main space, there were tons of games for them to engage with and each Big was encouraged to interact with at least one person they didn’t know.

To conclude the night, each member of the YELLS Family gathered for a candle ceremony. During our candle ceremony, each Big along with every staff member shared how they would let their light shine in our program during this upcoming school year. Our Executive Director started the ceremony by lighting the initial candle and passing it around to each member of the circle. The ceremony significantly impacted the Bigs because each member of the circle was reassured that they could rely on their peers for support in the areas where they still have room to grow. The ceremony also set the tone for collaboration, teamwork, and dependability throughout the school year.

On Saturday, in preparation for the school year, the Bigs did a role-playing session where they acted out different scenarios that they could encounter with their Little during their sessions. This activity taught the students how to respond and prepare for some of the things they could possibly experience with their little. At the end of the activity, each student was tasked with sharing a helpful tip for dealing with specific situations with their peers.

Saturday Afternoon, the Bigs were tasked with going out into the Franklin Gateway community and completing a scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt included things such as “introduce yourself to a member of the community, take a picture with a community member or in front of an apartment complex, and share information about the YELLS Mentoring Program with a member of the community. The Bigs also created “Little Jars of Sunshine” that included tiny inspirational messages and they were able to share those with the community as well.

Our Mentoring Retreat was a huge success! We’re so excited for to see our Bigs flourish as Mentors in our program and we can’t wait to see the fun activities they have planned.

Marietta Country Club’s ThanksGIVING Classic raises $150,000 for YELLS!

YELLS has enjoyed abundant holiday blessings this year thanks to the generosity, hard work, and community spirit of the Marietta Country Club.  For the past nine years, the Marietta Country Club has been giving back to local organizations through their ThanksGIVING Golf Classic, and YELLS is so honored to be the recipient of this year’s event.  Through the hard work of the event committee led by Chair Stacy Haubenschild and incredible sponsors like the Kiwanis Club of Marietta, Henssler Financial, MSI Benefits Group, Giles and Sherra Bowman Family Fund, Brown, Dutton, and Crider Law Firm, Roof U.S. Commercial and Residential, Binkley Electric, Croy Engineering, and so many others, the event was an incredible success.

The Marietta Country Club ThanksGIVING Golf Classic mobilized the goodwill and giving spirit of the Cobb County community to raise $150,000 for YELLS!

Stacy Haubenschild is President of the Board of Directors at Marietta Country Club and says that the tournament is one of her favorite pieces of her role because of how well it brings the broader Marietta community together.

“We reach out to a lot of local areas, whether to see if they want to participate in the tournament for golf, or sometimes even just looking for auction items”, Stacy said. “We have a number of local companies, from artists to restaurants that will donate, whether it’s dinners or pieces of artwork. Other golf course facilities around the area will donate rounds of golf for the people to bid on during the tournament and that sort of thing. So it really does bring the entire community together from all these different reaches, not just from the membership of Marietta Country Club.”

This contribution is a game changer for YELLS that comes at a time when community needs are at their highest, and we are stretched to continue to uplift and empower our youth and their Franklin Gateway neighborhood while meeting the many needs of families.  This significant investment of flexible funding will allow us to forecast future spending to build the capacity of our organization to continue empowering youth. It will be put to good use to make a true difference for our community and ensure our important work is sustained and the next generation of change makers thrives.

We had the opportunity to present to MCC’s selection committee, and we shared a video that helped them fall in love with YELLS and choose us, just like all of our YELLS youth, parents, and alumni!

Beyond the amazing investment in our work, the tournament day itself was both a blast and a wonderful chance for our teens to put their work into practice.  Our YELLS Mentoring Program Bigs and Community Action Café teens enjoyed spending the day at the beautiful Marietta Country Club and networking with so many kind-hearted community leaders.  It was so much fun to cheer on the teams and celebrate their commitment to our shared community.

We are so grateful for the many volunteers that invested their time, creativity, and hard work to make this day possible.  YELLS is honored to have been chosen and blessed to build a new partnership the Marietta Country Club and its wonderful members who have shown a deep dedication to supporting our local community.  We would like to thank Marietta Country Club for choosing to support our organization in such a monumental way, and we are so excited to continue to build this great new partnership with the amazing people we have met already! We would also like to thank Cobb Community Foundation, who introduced YELLS to the Marietta Country Club, for their continued support and advocacy for YELLS! The Cobb County community is in good hands.

Thank you Marietta Country Club!

Community Conversations

YELLS is a place for community empowerment and action, and our Community Conversations event provided an intentional forum for youth, parents, neighbors, business leaders, City and County representatives, and stakeholders to unite to uplift our shared community. As our special project in celebration of the National PAL (Police Athletic and Activities League) Day of Service, we brought these voices together and offered a seat at the table to share what matters to them within their community.  It was powerful for youth and parents to raise their voices and for community leaders and local partners to hear what residents feel are the greatest needs of their family and Franklin Gateway community right now.

Our incredible YELLS Mentoring Program Bigs and Community Action Café Teens were the hosts for the day, welcoming guests and encouraging conversations at each of the table rotations.  Groups of youth, parents, and community leaders and stakeholders rotated to engage in meaningful discussions led by local experts. The following topics were chosen based on issues that community members had expressed as important to them:

Access to Parks & Green Space on Franklin Gateway (Rich Deckman, City of Marietta Parks & Recreation Deputy Director)

Affordable Housing/Rent (Kelsey Thompson, City of Marietta Community Development Manager and Monica DeLancy, We Thrive on Riverside Renters Association Executive Director)

FRCA & the Power of an Active & Connected Community (Antoinette Reed, FRCA President)

Embracing Neighbors of Various Cultures & Languages (Lorena Beltran, YELLS Board Member)

How to Engage Your Elected Officials & Have a Voice in Your Community (Leroy Tre’ Hutchins, Cobb County Schools Board Member)

Franklin Fair Community Block Party: What You’d Like to See & What You’ll Bring (Kevin Keefe, YELLS Board Member)

What Else? What are the Other Needs of Franklin Gateway Families Right Now? (Melanie Kagan, The Center for Family Resources CEO)

Design Your Ideal Franklin Gateway (Caroline Whaley, Gateway Marietta CID Executive Director)

Police & Community Relationships (Officer Chris Cannon, Marietta Police Department)

We’re so grateful to each of our amazing table facilitators who made this event possible.  Check out this feature news article in Fresh Take Georgia that captures the highlights of this exciting day! The event even made it into Chairwoman Cupid’s newsletter!

The day was filled with passionate conversations, new perspectives, deeper understanding, and inspiration for each of us to do our part in shaping our Franklin Gateway neighborhood together. It served as the perfect catalyst as our youth and parents begin to dream about how they want to use their skills and passions to shape their Franklin Gateway neighborhood. This productive day was just the first step in mobilizing community to come together to discuss the tough issues and develop ideas on how we can activate the strengths of our community to make positive change for all. It will take hard work and collaboration, but that’s why we’re here, and we’re looking forward to continuing to mobilize our community to take action on the issues that matter to them.

Partner Spotlight – Assurant

We are so grateful for our wonderful partners at Assurant who have gone above and beyond in providing our teens with incredible opportunities to explore their professional passions and practice their networking skills, as well as experiences that they will remember for a long time!

Assurant Career Day

In the past couple of months, Assurant has truly outdone themselves in supporting our YELLS youth through their own volunteer initiatives! A few amazing Assurant volunteers really have adopted YELLS, and they have brought to life some incredible ideas to make a lasting impact for our youth. This fall Assurant organized and hosted a Career Day specifically for YELLS teens where they were invited to chat with employees from various departments and learn more about what it’s like working at Assurant! They truly are a company that invests in their employees and empowers them to give back. Jill Heibult, Rosa Ortiz, and Tonya Lowmon have blown us away by their commitment to our organization and their passion that mobilizes so many others to support our youth as well. This was a highly beneficial networking opportunity for our YELLS teens and Assurant did their part in making this custom-designed event fun and meaningful for our youth!

They opened up their doors and allowed our students to be able to have a world class experience by going into a Fortune 500 global company – they are global, they are worldwide,” said Monica Freeman, our Director of Programs. “They gave our students an in depth look into what Assurant is and how Assurant helps people, even down to T Mobile, their phones and their insurance.

Our students learned that once they graduate high school at 18 they can walk in and get a job at Assurant,” Monica continued. “Assurant hires students right out of high school, you don’t even need a degree because they train you on-site. So a lot of our students were very excited about that opportunity.”

Assurant COO, Keith Meier, shows his support for YELLS and his commitment to employee engagement in our shared community.

The level of support and investment that Assurant showed our teens at this event cannot be overstated. Their employees were genuinely interested in getting to know our teens and helping them explore the career paths that interest them the most! Even beyond acquiring a job after high school, those shared conversations and connections empower our youth and give them the confidence to pursue their own paths in life. And if that wasn’t enough, Assurant also had Chick-fil-A sponsor the event by providing lunch for our teens! By the end of the day, our teens walked away full of ideas for their future, and also bags full of Assurant swag!

Assurant and United Way Campaign Kickoff

A month after their career day, Assurant held a Jamboree supporting United Way of Greater Atlanta’s annual campaign, and YELLS was invited to share our story of how we have served the youth of Franklin Gateway. Assurant and United Way of Greater Atlanta’s annual campaign kickoff event was located at the Ponce City Market rooftop in Midtown Atlanta, and we saw it as an excellent opportunity to send our Community Action Cafe teens to represent our organization!

“Our students were the representatives of YELLS at the event, and this was an amazing experience for our youth,” Ms. Monica said. “None of our youth had ever been on top of Ponce City Market. A lot had never even seen the skyline of Atlanta. So the experience of that alone really made a difference within their lives.”

Our teens spoke from the heart about their experiences growing up on Franklin Gateway and finding their place at YELLS, and it was clear that they resonated with many in the audience. When they got off the stage, they got to further practice their networking skills by connecting with professionals from around the nonprofit world with the sun setting on the Atlanta skyline behind them.

The cherry on top of Assurant’s continued support of YELLS came the very next day when Assurant employees assembled literacy snack packs for our youth! Last year, as part of a volunteer engagement initiative for their employees, Assurant provided our youth with awesome STEAM kits that they could work on during the holiday break, and this year Assurant focused on promoting literacy and healthy snacks. All in all they made 100 bags for our youth to take home!

In sum, we could not be more grateful for Assurant’s consistent and genuine investment into our youth. Our mission has always been to uplift our teens and equip them with the skills to make meaningful change in their community, and Assurant has undoubtedly aided us in this endeavor.

Thank you Jill, Rosa, Tonya,
and all the amazing folks at Assurant!

Assembly Challenges

Assembly Challenges are a way for our Summer Camp Family Groups to build camaraderie and practice YELLS Values through some friendly competitions. Youth from various ages are in “Family” cohorts with the same camp counselor leaders throughout the summer. It’s an extra group of peers and team members that they can build relationships with and work as a team outside of their age groups. Each day before lunch, Family groups compete in challenges that get them to work together, cheer each other on, and practice good sportsmanship and YELLS Values, all while having fun – and often getting a bit messy!

At the start of camp, YELLS Family teams are challenged to uplift and support their “Egg Baby” by building the tallest tower that will safely hold their egg. They must earn supplies for their tower by completing team challenges. This activity kicks off the first week of camp for youth to bond with their camp family team and tackle challenges that set camp expectations and teach YELLS Values.

Additional Activity Resources:

The YELLS approach and the Kolb Experiential Learning Model call for us to use concrete and engaging experiences to expose youth to new concepts and learning. Then, we can use the debrief process to help youth reflect on that experience and guide them to discover new ideas, skills, and mindsets. Based on adaptations to an activity and intentional debrief questions, you can use just about any experience to teach a concept. Our goal as YELLS staff is to find the most fun and out of the box activities that we can adapt to teach our values and the skills we hope youth will learn. Here are some resources for highly engaging activities that can be adapted to teach our YELLS Foundational Concepts.
