Assembly Challenges

Assembly Challenges are a way for our Summer Camp Family Groups to build camaraderie and practice YELLS Values through some friendly competitions. Youth from various ages are in “Family” cohorts with the same camp counselor leaders throughout the summer. It’s an extra group of peers and team members that they can build relationships with and work as a team outside of their age groups. Each day before lunch, Family groups compete in challenges that get them to work together, cheer each other on, and practice good sportsmanship and YELLS Values, all while having fun – and often getting a bit messy!

Egg Tower Competition:

At the start of camp, YELLS Family teams are challenged to uplift and support their “Egg Baby” by building the tallest tower that will safely hold their egg. They must earn supplies for their tower by completing team challenges. This activity kicks off the first week of camp for youth to bond with their camp family team and tackle challenges that set camp expectations and teach YELLS Values.

Additional Activity Resources:

The YELLS approach and the Kolb Experiential Learning Model call for us to use concrete and engaging experiences to expose youth to new concepts and learning. Then, we can use the debrief process to help youth reflect on that experience and guide them to discover new ideas, skills, and mindsets. Based on adaptations to an activity and intentional debrief questions, you can use just about any experience to teach a concept. Our goal as YELLS staff is to find the most fun and out of the box activities that we can adapt to teach our values and the skills we hope youth will learn. Here are some resources for highly engaging activities that can be adapted to teach our YELLS Foundational Concepts.
